What is my rising sign? · Ascendant · free

Your rising sign, also called your Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It shapes how you meet the world and how the world first sees you. Enter your birth details below to find yours.

All twelve signs rise over the horizon once every 24 hours, so the rising sign changes about every two hours. This is why the birth time matters so much: two people born on the same day in the same city, a few hours apart, have different rising signs.

On average the Ascendant moves one degree every four minutes. A birth time that is right to within fifteen minutes or so is normally enough to fix the sign. If your Ascendant falls in the first or last degrees of a sign, check the time again against a birth certificate.

The birth city matters as well. The same clock time gives a different rising sign at a different longitude and latitude, so choose the place where you were actually born and not where you grew up.

Your rising sign sets up the houses of your whole birth chart. It decides which area of life each planet and each transit falls in, which is why astrologers often read horoscopes for the rising sign before the Sun sign.

FAQ

What is my rising sign?

Your rising sign is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time and place you were born. Enter your birth date, time and city in the calculator on this page and it shows your rising sign and its degree.

Is the rising sign the same as the Ascendant?

Yes. Ascendant is the technical name for the exact degree that was rising, and rising sign is the zodiac sign that degree falls in.

Can I find my rising sign without my birth time?

No, not reliably. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so the birth date alone cannot give it. Look for the time on a birth certificate or hospital record, or ask a relative. Without it the calculator still gives your Sun and Moon signs.

How exact does my birth time need to be?

Within about fifteen minutes is usually enough to get the right sign, because the Ascendant moves roughly one degree every four minutes. If your result is in the first or last few degrees of a sign, a more exact time is worth finding.

How is my rising sign different from my Sun sign?

Your Sun sign describes your core identity and comes from your birth date. Your rising sign describes your outward manner, your first reactions and the layout of your chart, and comes from your birth time and place. Most people have a rising sign that differs from their Sun sign.

Why does my rising sign matter for horoscopes?

Horoscopes describe which areas of life the planets are moving through, and those areas, the houses, are counted from the rising sign. Reading a forecast for your rising sign usually fits the timing of real events better than reading it for your Sun sign.
